Fans of funfair kitsch will find their mecca at Oakley Illuminations, based on the East Sussex coast, near St Leonards on Sea. Housed in an old renovated public house called the Admiral Benbow, Philip Oakley’s workshop and showroom houses a wide collection of vintage decorative lighting, funfair pieces and children’s rides - as well as newly designed products. Having collected lights for many years and worked at Blackpool Illuminations, Philip, and his girlfriend Olivia, wanted to create lighting that brings a touch of fairground magic into interiors. “With technology and cheaper foreign labour we wanted to try to help keep alive traditions and crafts that are sadly dying out, and get all our pieces manufactured in the UK.” Oakley Illuminations also offer a bespoke service for making wall lights, mirrors, neon signs, built-up letters and motifs, as well as selling a collection of vintage fairground pieces.
