Susan Elliott is a Hastings based artist, whose work concentrates on using mosaic materials to produce humourous, iconic images. Using recycled, ceramic kitchen crockery, tourist mementos, novelty mugs and badges, Susan mixes this media with more traditional mosaic tesserae, creating multi-faceted, jewel-like pieces. ‘I have been an avid collector of kitsch, tourist memorabilia for years, and I finally decided to archive it all in a way that I thought made sense, and that became the recycled ceramic-mosaic Union Flags. These memorabilia have such a stereotypical image and message, whilst at the same time providing fond memories of seaside resort holidays, fish and chips, or Beefeaters and the Queen, for example.’ Susan’s work tells a story of a nation and its saucy ‘Carry On’ side, whilst at the same time totally feeding her habit for rummaging in charity shops and car boot fairs! Her work is available at Mauger Modern – London, 81 Rochester Row, London SW1P 1LJ 0207 233 8755 or email To see Susan’s neon and fairground light mosaic flags from Saturday 2nd June, pop along to The Trafalgar, 2 Spring Gardens, Trafalgar Square, London SW1A 2TS.
